Edward Song joined the Department of History and Politics in 2024 as the Herbert Hoover Endowed Chair of Faith and Public Life and as a professor of political science.
He arrived from Westmont College, where he taught philosophy and political science the previous 11 years. In addition to his teaching role, he served as associate director (2021-24), interim director (2019-20) and director of internships (2017-21) in the college’s Center for Social Entrepreneurship, as well as Westmont's pre-law advisor and director of post-graduate fellowship advising.
Prior to his tenure at Westmont, Ed was an associate (2012-13) and assistant professor (2006-12) at Louisiana State University. His areas of expertise include moral and political philosophy, applied and professional ethics, philosophy of law, race, public policy, and philosophy of religion.
He earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Virginia in 2005, a master’s degree from the University of Oxford in 1998, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Yale in 1994. Ed lives in Wilsonville. His wife, Felicia, is a sociologist and writer on technology and culture, and they have two children. He is an avid runner, cook and musician.
