Ever consider a career that puts your love of animals into practice? 性视界传媒 offers the science and mathematics courses required by veterinary schools. You will most likely major in biology, but you may choose any academic major we offer as long as you take the specific courses required of your veterinary school of choice.
The best part is, you will have an academic advisor to help plot your course. Consult with them early to develop a sound plan, maintain excellent grades (3.5 GPA or above) and perform well on national admissions tests (the GRE and VAT, usually taken in the spring of your junior year). You will be well-positioned for your next adventure – veterinary school!
Beyond that, you’ll have a plethora of choices. You may work in clinical settings in a specific field, such as companion animal or “pet” medicine, livestock medicine, equine medicine, laboratory animal medicine, reptile medicine, or ratite medicine. Or, you may specialize in veterinary disciplines such as surgery, dermatology or internal medicine, after postgraduate training and certification.
Courses / Curriculum What Will I Study?
- Your course of study will vary depending on your major, but you must take certain courses to meet veterinary school requirements.
- Your course load will include classes in biology (general biology, genetics, advanced physiology), chemistry (general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry), physics (general physics) and mathematics (statistical procedures).
- We offer undergraduate research and clinical job-shadowing opportunities, and many of our students engage in research both at the university and at Oregon Health & Science University.
- You should also focus on learning as much as you can about medicine, ethics, etc., from physicians, local hospitals, and other health professionals. Shadowing a veterinarian can be helpful in determining whether you would really like to have a career in the profession.
Veterinary schools have competitive admissions processes, so you should choose electives that will demonstrate your knowledge and dedication to learning. Select your major based on what you enjoy and where you will thrive academically. However, most pre-veterinary students major in biology.

An introduction to the origin and maintenance of biodiversity for students majoring in Biology. This project-based course will provide foundational exposure to the process of scientific discovery, twenty-first century science practices, and the fields of ecology and evolutionary biology. A general genetics course covering Mendelian genetics, population genetics, and an introduction to molecular biology. This course fulfills the requirement for biology majors, and is appropriate for those with an interest in current topics in genetics, including inheritable diseases, cloning, and other recent scientific breakthroughs. An introduction to the modern field of molecular biology. We will examine the structure, organization, and transfer of genetic information at the molecular level and its requirement for life processes. Viral, prokaryotic, and eukaryotic systems will be examined. Major themes include transcriptional regulation, post-transcriptional events (RNA processing), and regulation of translation. A majors-level course intended to meet the anatomy requirement of graduate/professional programs in health-care fields. A course presenting a systemic approach to the study of the human body. Lecture presentations begin with an introduction of anatomical terminology, tissue classification, and developmental origins to systems. Body structure will be studied by organ systems and will include histology. Laboratory work will follow a regional gross anatomy of the human body through cadaver dissection, human skeletal collections and preserved specimens. Additional course fee is required. A foundational course for the study of computer science and information systems. The course covers an overview of programming methodology and gives the student an ability to write computer programs using standard style and structure. The class is a study of limits of functions, applications of derivatives, and an introduction to integration. Prerequisite: MATH 190 Precalculus Mathematics or sufficient score on Math Placement Exam (See Mathematics Department).
Optional Thesis
Students can petition the department thesis committee by the end of the fall semester of their junior year for permission to do original research as part of their degree requirement. Students allowed to pursue the thesis option must:
- Complete an acceptable research proposal and the Research Methods course (BIOL 384) by the end of the spring semester of the junior year.
- Take up to 4 hours of Biological Research (BIOL 465) between the spring semester of their junior year and graduation, and Senior Thesis (BIOL 496) during the spring semester of their senior year.
- Complete a written thesis acceptable to the thesis committee by April 1 of their senior year.
- Prepare a poster and give an oral presentation of their research prior to graduation.
The department considers this an honor to be noted on the student's transcript. The thesis is designed to enhance a student's preparation for graduate or professional school.

Introduces and examines as literary texts significant works of world mythologies. Readings stress those cross-cultural themes and literary forms exemplifying the ideals, values, and concerns that have shaped our shared human condition. The course surveys myths from African, Middle Eastern, Asian, Native American, Meso-American, Oceanic, and European literatures. Universal motifs and unique differences in these traditional sacred and secular stories are examined with an eye to understanding how myths underpin cultural, community, and individual values, ethical teachings, and spiritual experiences that continue to inform the world's cultures.
Considers works written in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and the Americas during the medieval and early modern periods. Students examine culturally defining texts that reflect both the uniqueness of culture and the universality of literary themes. Students read a sample of texts written between the medieval period and 1900. The focus is on texts that continue to be important to the culture they represent, such as The Tale of Genji, Journey to the West, The Thousand and One Nights, The Divine Comedy, and Shakuntala.
Considers contemporary writings from women around the world. Students analyze these literary texts, examine the cultures they represent, and keep apprised of current events related to women. An introduction to the core issues and problems that affect the entire world, including threats to security such as war and terrorism, the rise of globalization, the persistence of inequality between rich and poor countries, and the degradation of the environment.
Why do wars and conflicts occur and how do we prevent these? This course considers the causes of global insecurity (from wars between countries to transnational terrorism to genocide) and examines the various approaches to their resolution, including the creation of international institutions and military alliances. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of religion in global political conflict.

As a science student, I have also been challenged to integrate my faith with science, and figure out how the two can co-exist and intermingle. Overall, I feel like I am walking away from Fox with a deeper understanding of who God is, and I am more confident in my faith than I was when I stepped onto campus as a freshman.
